Class discussion, Feb. 3

- First of all, what did you think of this reading? Did you like it? hate it? refuse to do it to see if eventually I'll break down in tears? Why do you think I had you read this for class?
- What are ethos, pathos, and logos? Give an example of each, if possible.
- How do you see yourself working each of these into your mirror essay?
- Do you think one of these strategies will be more/less important than the others? If so, which one and why? If necessary, could you rank ethos/pathos/logos in order of most to least effective and relevant to your assignment?

Respond to these points based on your reading for today. We'll be using your writing to spark discussion so that we don't have to spend the hour listening to me make sideways comments about my own voice.

Let me emphasize - THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER, ONLY A WELL-DEFENDED ARGUMENT. The purpose of these discussion points is to see how well you think, not to test you on what you know. It is far better to go out on a limb in the aim of demonstrating an interesting point than to play it safe and make no ripple in the discussion.

  1. -Oops.

-Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are three techniques used in persuasive writing to persuade your reader. Ethos (character) is a way to convince your reader that you are a credible source and arguments you may make are valid. Pathos (experience) is persuading by tapping into the readers emotions. Finally, logos (word) is persuasion by use of logic and reasoning.

-I could see myself using both pathos and logos, because there should be emotion behind any paper as well as logical reasoning. However, on an essay about myself, ethos isn't really needed because I don't need to convince anyone that I am me, that's just sort of a given.

-In order of effectiveness, I think I would rank them pathos, logos, ethos. I think when it comes to retelling life stories, emotion would be the strongest of the three to use, followed by logic and reasoning. As I said earlier, I don't think ethos would be all that important.

  2. ethos-what is put in your writing so that you know that, you as the author is writing it. putting your own twist and turns on a writing so that people understand its yours.

Pathos-persuading the reader or the audience by using emotion. Really trying to connect deeply with your reader

logos-persuading the reader by use of thought or reasoning. Having material and facts to back up your opinion.

  3. i dont currentely have the book yet so i was unable to read the ten pages i was suppose to. so i look the liberty to google what everything meant and got a general idea what was going on. personally i like all of the topics and feel that they are all interesting in their own way, to look beyond the definition to see what it actually does mean. i feel like we are reading this to see what kind authors there are. ethos are the type of writing to say who actually wrote the story and it wasnt just made up. it gives the authorities. pathos is more about emotions and persuading the readers emotions and making them feel the emotions behind what is beind read or writen. logos are about logic and persuading the readers by good reasoning without doubt with a lot of thought. personally i think that all of these are relevantly convinient. if i had to rank the following, pathos, logos, and ethos, this is given the imformation that i know about the following.

  4. I thought the reading was very dry, but I also dislike textbook style writing. It has it's use, it's just boring to me. But I trudged through the reading assignment as to not make my instructor cry in class.
Ethos is the sense that audiences develop about composers is called ethos.
Pathos is a composer's use of strategies to shift an audience's emotions.
Logos is a text's arrangements (including its logical arguments)
I believe I have worked this into my assignment, especially Pathos. I believe that Pathos is the most effective for this assignment because this assignment is supposed to be about life changing experiences. Since the paper is more personal rather than a factual paper I think it is more important to express your emotions in this paper, and to allow the reader to experience those emotions also.

  5. When skimming through this book it was really easy to find the definitions of ethos, pathos, and logos with a very detail example for each using the same books, which is extremely helpful. I never knew about the exsistance of these parts of writing and I found after I read the definitions that they are very important to the developement and reading of books. I am now excited to use these in my writing nowadays.
I believe with having a very emotional essay that I will be able to not only structure my essay in a logical way, but people will able to understand myself as a person better. I also believe I will be able to play on peoples emotions because everyone will be able to relate to my three life experinces in some way.
Pathos is more important for me to capture my audience who then my be able to better understand me as a peron through ethos with the help of logos.

  6. I feel that the reading was a little confusing. I mean I’m reading it as fast as I can but I’m starting to understand the three terms, Ethos, Pathos, and logos. Ethos is the way that you think about the author. It is basically knowing how the writer writes. Pathos is how the author uses emotions to connect to the reader. Logos is how the author arranges the words in his writing. I see myself using ethos a lot in my essay much more than pathos or logos. And if I were to arrange them form most effective to least would be pathos, ethos, and logos.

  7. Ethos is to shape others perspective of the composers(aka the writers) to humor, etc., to make it look proffessional.

Pathos is to show the emotions of the readers and writers, such as joy, anger, etc. This makes it look oring at first, but then the title catches your eye

(Assuming these words are Greek and I have not even read the text so poop on me[censoring in effect])

Logos means word in Greek. The texts' font and size, either to large, middle, or small scale.

All of these refer to how to shape book covers? Again I haven't read it, so don't strike me with lightening.

I can see myself writing such an essay, as I have before in High School and on my own time. I usually would have a comedic writing or perhaps some dark, gothic poetic long words. Memories of what I have done that I do today is a sweet fading bloom.

I believe people will either be scared or interested by my writing, hoping that I don't get arrested and thrown in jail. My writing can possess harsh words and interesting viewpoints in my writing. I elieve I can rank myself in PATHOS to ETHOS, with LOGOS in between the other two words. PATHOS is used in my writings and so does LOGOS. ETHOS and I may have some difficult time to get along.

    Peace out.

  8. I think that this reading was kind of boring. Just the look of the book kind of discouraged me from wanting to read it.
-Ethos are how the person presents their book or writing at first sight.People are able to analyze it just by looking at the book cover at first sight, letting the audience know that a person truly wrote this book. Example--> The book "Naked" has a cover with boxers on it, leaving me with the impression that the boxers came off. It makes me curious as to how the boxers came off. Making a kind of humor for the audience.
-Pathos are more directed toward emotions. To shift the feelings of the readers. Example--> Showing an xray hits my emotional side rather then showing boxers, which makes me think the author was trying to be funny.
-Logos are sound logic and the way it is composed and what will hit the readers first in your writing. Example--> At first, I saw the boxers, making me laugh, and then seeing under the jacket, where there is an xray, hitting me emotionally.
I see myself working these into my paper each in a different way. I might use ethos right in the beginning of my paper to draw their attention to my paper. I might use pathos when describing the more emotional and close to the heart experiences I am planning on talking about. I might use the logos throughout my whole paper. I will probably use logos the least and pathos probably the most.Pathos being the the most effective for the paper. I found that the examples in the book were very helpful for understanding the meanings of each of these words.

  9. ethos, pathos, and logos are all forms of persuasion. Ethos is the persuasion that your writing is credible or believable. Pathos is used to persuade emotion in the reader, and make it intersting for them. Logos is the persuasion using resoning whether it is inductive or deductive reasoning used to back up your writing.
I could use all of these to make sure my writing seems believable and get readers to want to read my story and back up my work with these three writing styles. I can see using ethos to show that the stories in my life are true with descriptive details of what happened. Also, so that the readers will be interested. In order i beieve it would be ethos then pathos then lastly logos, even though they are all important in our writing.

  10. ethos is based on the charater of the speaker ,it shows that your the one writing it. Pathos is based on emotion, so you're trying to get the reader hooked on the reading by showing sympathy.
Logos is persuading the reader by logic, in example a well thought out paper. I think it all depends on who you are and what you want the reader to precieve you as. I think logos is most important because if you have a well thought out paper eventually all three will be worked in if you have a well thought out paper in the first place. I think Logos would be most effective, then ethos because you need to see who the person is, lastly would be pathos.

  11. ethos-the ethical appeal or credibility -
pathos- is the emotional appeal- persuading by using the audiences emotions.
logos-persuading the reader with reason and logic

i see my self working these things in my paper quite naturally first off with ethos- the paper needs to be written by me otherwise the whole assignment is kinda moot if i don't write it.
Pathos since it's an emotional appeal it would work in my favor if i can make the audience be in my favor especially on the things which have shaped my life and Logos lastly if i do not use logic and reason my paper is not gonna be worth reading

logos and ethos are the 2 most important but in those 2 ethos is the more important of the 2 because if no one thinks your paper is worth reading because of credibility then its not gonna matter if your paper is written logically if no one wants to read it

  12. Ethos mean to convince the author of something.
Pathos means to make somehting see things the same way you see them.
Logos means to see things the way u see them for a certain reason.
I can see myself using these to make the writing i am working on better.
I think that none of these are really important becasue u should already do some sort of these in your wrting style to start with. I never even heard of these before today. I have been writting papers all my life and i never used these before.

  13. I found the reading for today interesting. I think the use of pathos, logos, and ethos is cool because they all find ways to influence the readers thoughts. Ethos is the use of influencing an audience what the composer is like. So by using a cover like they did for 'naked' it shows that the author isn't huge and that the book is most likely laid back and humorous. Pathos is the use of strategies to shift and audiences emotions. So an author having a huge topic at the beginning of a book like death will severely influence a readers emotions. Logos is the order in which a composer puts things together so that you will look at certain things first. So if you use a larger text on a page of smaller text a person will most likely by lead to read the larger text first. Normally what the composer wants you to see first they will draw your attention to it. I think that all of these are important. I feel they're most important for book covers or openings because its all about influencing a consumer. I think I will use Pathos in the start of my mirror essay to draw the reader in. I will also definitely use ethos to make the reader understand me more. This reading helped me understand these writing tools more and i'm glad we went over this.

  14. Well, first of all, I forgot to do the reading so I figured out what ethos, pathos, and logos were from the internet. I think you had the class read about this because in our lives we will be doing many different kinds of writing. Ethos, Pathos, and Logos may work differently in different types of writing. It is used every day and I never even knew about it. I think that these will tie well into my mirror essay because from my understanding these can tie into any writing especially one’s written about oneself. Ethos to me is like having your own personal pieces in any writing even if it is like a mirror essay all about oneself. Pathos will tie into my mirror essay because some of the topics and pieces are very emotionally driven. Logos may not work as well into my mirror essay as the other two. Pathos will probably be most effective in my essay then ethos then logos.

  15. Ethos is an assumption about the author or text based on how it is written or presented. Pathos is an alteration of the reader's emotional state through what is written or how it is presented. Logos is the use text sizes to make the reader read or designate important in a certain order.

I don't see myself consciously working these elements into my writing, not right now at least. The idea of ethos is probably the most relevant strategy for this writing project, as we are trying to express part of ourselves through our writing of past events in our lives. Logos would be least effective, since we are writing in a specific format, void of images and arrangements. Pathos would be more effective than logos, but probably less so than ethos. It would be useful in helping to explain why it had such an effect on you by getting the emotional state across.
