Peer review and draft writing

I am interested in getting your honest opinion of the peer review process from Monday without fear of repercussion. As such, I will be moderating your comments to this post. While I understand that, at first, that sounds like Big Brother, what moderation entails is this:

You will write out your response and click submit as usual. If you would like your post to be visible to me only, however, you need to post as "Anonymous" by changing the options in the "Comment As" box below your comment. Rather than being immediately readable to everyone, however, your comments will be submitted for my approval first. I will be the only person who reads your comment, and as such you may respond honestly to the process of peer review without worrying about offending anyone else in the class.

This does NOT mean, however, that I will tolerate rudeness or offensiveness. I expect any critiques you have of the peer review process to be respectful and constructive, rather than aggressive or hostile. I am asking you to critique the process of peer review, not to critique your peers. I welcome you to offer critiques to me personally, and I assure you that I will not take any comments you have on the process of peer review personally unless you explicitly say "You, sir, are a jerk." If that's the case... I'm rubber and you're etc. etc.

In a comment to this post, please respond to the following:

1. Have you done peer review activities before? What is your response to the process of peer review as it applies to the composition of this paper? What did you find helpful or advantageous? What did you think needed to be changed?

2. Did reading your peer's papers give you a clearer understanding of your own writing? How did making comments on some one else's paper influence the way you think of your own?

3. How did it feel to receive direct comments on something you've written? Will you be implementing the comments you received into your paper? Did you receive any comments that you decided not to implement? How did you distinguish between comments you chose to use and comments you chose not to use?

Make sure that you post your response to this prompt BY TWELVE O'CLOCK ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. If you did not participate in the peer review session on Monday for any reason, please indicate that in your response and discuss instead what advantages and disadvantages you think peer review adds to the process of creating a paper.

  1. 1. Yes I have done peer review before in high school, maybe even some in grade school. As for the composition of this paper I found it very useful because this is a college writing class and we are supposed to learn how to write. By taking in other people's thoughts and opinions, you only become a more successful writer. I liked how it was one on one. I got to read someone's paper while they were reading mine. In that 50 minutes you even got to know a little bit about that person even if you did not know them before this exercise. I did not like how we had to fill out those sheets. I understand that was a way of collecting our thoughts on the paper, but I just felt it was unneeded.
2.By reading my peer's paper, I realized that through finding out their mistakes and reading their papers I found a better understanding on how to write my own. I also noticed I am a better writer then some and not as good as others. I was honest on commenting on my peer's paper, as I hope she was with mine. It made me realize that my writing style is different than others, and thats okay.
3.I was okay with taking criticism although I did not think I would be. I find especially hard when writing about subjects close and dear to me. I am going to take what she said and try and make my paper better and more clear. I really did not receive comments not worth using. She did not really give me any comments not worth taking note of.

  2. I have never been involved in a peer review before. I found it very beneficial. It's hard to look at my own paper and see what needs changed because in my mind, it is the best thing ever written. I knew that my paper needed to be edited down, it was way too long. I found it very helpful to have my peer read it and give me advice on how to condense some of my thoughts.
By reading my peer's paper I realized what a different writing style she had. While I feel that I write better in first person, she is a very gifted third person writer. I find it alot harder to write in third person, and they way she writes really made me wish that she would turn it into a book so that I may read more. One of the comments that I made on her paper was that some of the paragraphs were a bit long, this was something that I had a problem with and was corrected at the writing commons.
I actually appreciated the direct comments that were given to me about my paper. I like to hear other's views and opinions. I didn't look at this exercise as something to be taken personally, but an exercise to help each other to write better papers.
I did implement the comments that were given to me. She gave me good suggestions and examples of what she felt would make a better paper. All in all I felt that the peer review process is a beneficial tool in which the writer and reader can both learn from.

  3. I have done peer reviewing before, but have never submitted anything to be reviewed. It is interesting to see what someone else has to say about your writing, how to better improve it and if your message is actually getting across. Unfortunately, the paper I reviewed was obviously rushed at last minute, but it gave me some insight in improving my paper. They used a lot of pathos in their writing, while I feel like I used very little to none.
It felt somewhat reassuring to have someone comment on my paper. I knew that it could be improved and had a vague idea, but it was useful having those ways pointed out. I felt like the paper and the subject of the paper was a very negative thing, since I honestly dislike my past greatly, and depressed me as I wrote it, but the positive comments and lack of personalized negative comments should make it easier to do something like this in the future. I will definitely use all comments made to strengthen my paper, as they all, for the most part, remind me of the rubric and how to better the grade I would receive.

  4. 1. I have done peer reviews before but not as constructed as this. My previous peer reviews were a lot less successful because it always results in the class just talking because we were never really taught the positive ways to criticize papers. So we either said your paper is great or you need to work on it. I found the work sheet very helpful because it made you find the points and pick out positives but also things to work on, which helped a lot. I didn’t feel that anything really needed to be changed.
    2. Reading my peer’s paper helped because it made me look harder at my own when I got it back. I think the critic at the writing center helped more with the construction of my paper rather than looking at someone else’s though.
    3. It felt fine getting direct comments on my writing. I was in newspaper at my school so I know how it feels to get your writing picked at. I will be taking some of the grammar comments into use. There were a few sentence changes and paragraph combination suggestions that I will not be using. I chose between comments I would and wouldn’t use by simply reading over my paper again and placing those changes in myself and seeing if I liked how they sounded or looked. If I didn’t feel the change was right or necessary I didn’t use it and if it was I did. It was nice getting another opinion and options on my paper. It helped me with my final draft and the rough draft deadline really helped me push to just get this paper finished.

  5. I have never done a peer review before in high school or grade school which i find kind of odd now that i think about it. anyway, i have mixed feelings about the peer review. i liked hearing someone else's opinion of my work. i feel like it is a good process because you are being critiqued by your audience so you get to know if they think your paper is interesting or if there are things they would like you to elaborate on. at the same time i feel like maybe its a little pointless because we are in the class to learn more about writing so its difficult to spot things in the paper that arent working out, at least this is how it is for me. the handout we were given to evaluate with was helpful, it broke it down and made it easier to voice my opinion on.

i am going to use the comments i recieved because they are helpful and could really make my paper more interesting. all comments i recieved ill be using to make my paper a little better good or bad. recieving positive comments on my writing makes me feel alot better about what im turning in and negative ones motivate me to make it better. all in all thumbs up on the peer review.

  6. Yes i have done peer review before in my high school english courses for all of my essays we had to write. I think it helps because it gets an outsiders look on your paper, because when you first finish your like wow this is amazing work even if its horrible just because your finished so its nice to get a classmates opinion before turning it in for a grade. If there was anything I would change it would be maybe more than one person look it over but we can do that on our own time, so I personally wouldnt change anything.
Reading someone elses paper did help because it gives you another opinion or another way to write your paper a different type of writing or story type than yours. Making comments on their paper helps by maybe you made the same mistake in your writing and reading someone elses could help you see what you both did wrong, other than that I'm not really sure how it helped.
It felt helpful to get comments on my paper and I used all of them to change and improve my paper so I guess I didn't really have to choose which to use or not because I thought they were all good ideas.

  7. I remember doing peer reviews since like middle school. I think we probably started peer reviewing in like 6th or 7th grade. It wasn’t as in depth as this class, of course, it was more of the grammar and spelling. I thought the process on Monday was pretty good. There is not much else to do besides give your paper to someone and hope they read over it well and give you good feedback. I think it could be changed by having more than just one classmate review the paper. Personally, I had someone besides my classmate review my paper so I am pretty confident in how it will turn out. Many people will need more than one or two or even three opinions.
Reading my peers paper made me feel more confident in mine. I felt like mine was written much much better then the person’s that I read and I did not understand the paper anymore after reading what the person had wrote. I did want to change one event, though.
I was happy to get comments on my paper. I got good helpful comments. I was told that my paper was well written and that the reader just wanted to know more about my feelings. I am going to use all of the comments I received because I think that they are necessary if I want my reader to really feel my stories.
I found it very odd reading other posts that I said I have been doing peer reviewing since middle school and other people haven’t done it until this class. I have always found it helpful in papers. I know I have peer reviewed many papers in my lifetime so I think some people are confused.

  8. I have done peer reviews before, actually a lot in high school. I found that this specific peer review was extremely helpful. I think it might have been more helpful than my writing center visit was. My reviewer pointed out things that I would have never seen on my own. It’s just nice to get someone else’s opinion on what you should fix or rewrite. I’m not sure that I’d change anything to the activity. The process was very smooth and very helpful.
Reading someone else’s paper helped me figure out some things that I missed in my paper, and ways that I could incorporate them in to my paper. When I read the other paper I got a good idea how the reader would view my paper, so therefore a better understanding of what I should do to my paper.
I think receiving comments on my own writing will definitely help me improve my paper. Some of his comments pointed things out that I would have never saw or even thought were confusing. I will be implementing some of the comments I received but not all of them. Some comments I felt won’t improve my paper at all.
Over all I think that the peer review was a good idea. It gave me a new perspective on my paper and the comments will help make my paper better. I think that we should use this activity again in future papers, and maybe have more than one per paper. Instead of just switching papers with one person, switch with two so you can get another opinion and more comments.

  9. All through middle school and throughout high I have done a few peer reviews, which I always find to be helpful and interesting to see how receptive my peers are to my paper. Everyone has the opportuity to benefit from peer critques just depending on the person to which they choose to read ove their work, because of the exsisting trust and familiarity between the writer and peer. For this paper I was looking forward to having the peer review because I wanted to get the chance to see how others had choosen to write their work because I know I choose to write mine in a unique way. I was excited that I got to choose my peer because I knew she would actually help me advance my paper. In the end with the help of my peer I broke down I a few paragraphs to creat emphases on the content, and I was able to make my paper have the altimate effect by using a uniform tense pattern. By reviewing her paper I was also able to realize that I left a few explainations out of my paper so I had to go back and then add them. I loved getting feed back from my peer who was very receptive to my paper which made me proud of the time I put into this paper.

  10. I can remember doing peer review in 5th grade and up. It doesn't really help at such a small age since we don't know what were looking for even when the teacher tells us what to look for. I feel as if it was just trying to get us accustomed to it. Even in high school when we had to do peer review i can say i never did it to the full extent because they would tell us to check someone else's paper but really everyone would glance it over and say you did a good job and not really critique it.

I think it did give a clearer understanding cause it was a change from reading your own paper. Giving comments on the other person's paper helped out so i could look for the same mistakes in my own paper that i didn't see before.

Now that we're in college i feel good about getting direct comments because it gives us a better look on our own paper that we didn't see when we first wrote it as i mentioned before. I will probably use all the advice since after we discussed and explained why it would look and sound better, i was able to see what the person was talking about when they read my paper.

  11. i would fisrt like to start by saying that i have typed my response to this question 3 times and evertime i try to post it it boots me off the websites so mr sabo you need to fix this wack website. In high school when we did peer reviwews it usually meant you handanded your paper to someone else and sat there and talked untill it was time to give your paper back, andd just said there paper was good without even reading it. For once the peer review we did in class helped me alot. I got many comments on my paper that i agreed with. I like getting direct comments on my paper. There is nothing worse that when a teacher says too many spelling mistakes. Or that a sentance was awkward. I would rather get comments on my paper that helped it flow better. Reading and making comments on someone elses paper also helps yours out. It helpes you to fade away from your normal style of writing and get different aspects from different people. I am for sure going to use all the comments that ryan put on my paper, bacuse they only helped.
