Structured Response, March 3

For class on Wednesday, March 3, please respond to the following prompt. In the interest of a more personalized response, I am purposely leaving this question more open-ended. It is your responsibility to determine what you think should be included in a substantial response.

Keeping in mind the "Net Generation" article and your own experience with multimodal writing for Project Two, how does multimodalism/new medium writing influence you? Why is multimodalism important for modern students?

Be sure to respond substantially by noon on Wednesday. IN ADDITION - START GIVING SERIOUS THOUGHT TO THE FREE RESPONSE POSTS YOU ARE EXPECTED TO MAKE. IF YOU ARE STILL UNCLEAR ON THE EXPECTATIONS OF FREE RESPONSE POSTS, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DISCUSS IT WITH ME. I CAN ONLY HOLD YOUR HAND SO MUCH ON GENERATING THE CONTENT FROM WHICH YOUR GRADE IS DERIVED.

  1. In using the multimodal/new medium writing style instead of just writing a regular paper, I was able to get away from my writing style and just tell my story by word of mouth. It influences me in my every day classes with teachers and professors using power points and visuals instead of just getting up in front of the room and talking. I would much rather sit and have discussions about things instead of formally writing them. People of today are coming up with more informal ways of communication daily. Through texts, email, facebook and myspace people from all over are staying connected by ways not possible before.
As a student in college, keeping my attention focused on one specific thing is quite challenging. I am constantly thinking about other things and my mind is wandering off to what I have due this week and what deadlines I need to meet. I need ways of learning that keep me interested in the topic at hand and I think multimodal and new mediums are the answer is many cases. Modern students of today probably feel the same way. What used to work in the old generations are not going to hold up in the net generation so to speak.
By doing project two, I realized that there are so many ways to tell stories, learn information, and present topics other than the traditional writing style. In some aspects it is much more effective, especially to people my age. It is important in that it suites our lifestyle much more then traditional writing and learning. It is important for the so called “modern students” because it accommodates them and the things that they are interested in. Instead of sitting in a room while someone reads their paper to you, you sit and watch a slideshow of pictures or listen to them sing about something important to them. This is much more interesting and a lot more likely to keep people of today’s attention.

  2. When writing in our new medium form personally i think it helps me more.I would choose to use power points, videos, audio recording versus our 5 paragraph essays anyday. I think it keeps me entertained and wanting to be involved in discussions or just work period. It influences me to want to do more of this in other classes as well as in this class. I like using a different form of writing to explain things, i feel more comfortable using my style because I can get more detail across and explain it how i want it to be.

  3. I think using the multimodal and new medium writing style instead of just writing a regular paper is an easier way to express your emotions. In your classes the things that keep you interested are being involved in the conversation and having a discussion. Not just sitting there listening to the professior go over a power point and you sit there and doze off or think about other things. Having a new medium is a way to make things more interesting and keeping people involved.
In project to I decided to use a picture slideshow to tell my story. Using this new medium it keeps the reader indulged into the story and inderstannding what I mean by seeing the picture. This makes the story to the point and it doesn't drag on and on and the reader won't get bored with it. I know when im reading a story if I see something interesting I will keep reading until I have read the whole story. And I think this will grab more peoples attention.

  4. Multimodal writing influences me in ways of letting me be creative in my writing. It doesn't have to always be a normal five paragraph paper we can write how we want to and can make up stuff that is not even true to back up our writing or project. It lets me use my imagination and make up why i chose the type of project I made. It keeps me intersted in the project and you can almost find it fun being creative and doing anything you want in your project. Only having a few guidelines helps so you dont just write what your supposed to just answering questions and you don't even have to write in these projects if you so choose not to so getting that option of using different resourses then just writing on word constantly. I would much rather use powerpoint or using pictures rather than writing pages of nonsense just to fill space.
Multimodalism is important for modern students to keep them interested. Many students will get bored in class and will go on facebook on their laptops or just text the rest of the class, but if the instructor can keep students interested with the mulitimodal writing for the notes then the students will stay interested and therefore learn everything they are supposed to. I like the multimodal types of teaching because interesting powerpoints and different short films or clips helps to keep me interested and I pay attention and usually do much better in that class than others where the teacher just sends me the notes and I sit there falling asleep.

  5. with all these different mediums and different ways of writing like in emails, text messages, facebook, instant messaging, and academic being used today people are able to write differently for all of them. multimodalism influences my writing because i incorporate alot of different ways when i write. its important and convenient to know different ways to write especially in a college setting. in different classes you use alot of different ways like blogging or interviews or writing notes for an oral presentation and even emailing teachers is a different kind of writing. in the case of project two my experience with doing interviews allowed me to have a better understanding of how to convert an essay into an interview format. there are so many different ways of writing beyond formal and informal and i think our generation is more intelligent and better communicators on account of it.

  6. With the modern student, things are expected instantaneously. Before if you wanted to correspond with a person in a different city, state, etc. you would write a letter, place it in the mailbox and have to wait a week or so to hear back from them. Now you can send a quick email or text message and receive a response within seconds. That is just one example of how the net generation's tention span is rapidly decreasing. This has changed the way a modern student learns in a classroom. No more can a student just be expected to sit in a lecture hall, read out of a text book and research out of an encyclopedia. This style of teaching requires the student's precious time. Time is more of a commodity than money now. It is easier for people to pay for convenience (ex. a cell phone bill) compared to wasting valuable time (ex. waiting for a piece of mail, that would have only cost them a .40 stamp). Therefore using a multimodal style to express a written view in a classroom is a much more exciting way to complete a project than just the same old fashion way of writing a paper. It helps to keep the attention of the modern student.
In my own experience with the multimodal project, I have learned to take the event from the first project and instead of just telling the story, am able to truly express the humor in the event. It helps to show what I feel was the funniest part about the birth of my daughter now as I look back at the event. Telling it in comic form instead of just a written paper I am able to give visual aid to that where a person who has never heard the full story could just look at the pictures and laugh hysterically, more so than just to read the words on the paper and have a chuckle.

  7. I think using multimodal and a new medium are great! It helps people tell stories when they aren’t so good at writing it down. Poetry, for example is a good medium that many people use to express themselves. Just like photography. It is important to keep different mediums in schools because it is also a good learning experience and seems to me to require more thought then just a normal essay. Multimodalism is important for modern students because things change over the years. It seems to me like there have always just been essays throughout the history of schools. It also seems like many things in schools have changed using technology. I feel like multimodalism is just a more modern way of writing.

  8. Using multimodal is definitely a better way to express yourself. Also, it gives you a chance to change from the boring way of just writing a long paper to making something more creative. Its going to be more difficult i think because its going to take a lot more thinking to try and flow with your story using the new medium so the people looking at it can clearly understand what story your trying to tell. Its good for modern students because it shows how were advancing in technology with knowing how to change it from a paper to a video, power point, voice recording, etc. Our world and technology are becoming "one" more and more every day so its better for students to have this knowledge of being able to transfer from old school ways to newer ways.

  9. I’ve enjoyed the multimodal writing for this project so far. Transforming my story into a completely different medium has been a much more enjoyable experience compared to just writing so research project. It has definitely been my favorite English project to date. I’ve never written a child’s story book before so this is all new ground to m. I think that multimodal writing is important so that students can have some variety in their work. I can’t even come close to counting how many five paragraph essays I’ve written, and doing something else for a change is really nice. I believe that students today need to have variety and choices in what they do. I absolutely loath five paragraph essays now that I’ve been forced to write so many, which consequently makes me not enjoy writing as much. I actually like this different medium project, especially compared to the previous project.

  10. In using a multimodal writing for project two I feel it was easier to express myself. You can add a lot more description and detail to something other then writing. I'm doing a story picture slide show which gives me a lot of freedom to tell my story with more emotion. Then having the pictures there gives people something to relate to and see things more clearly through my eyes. I think its very important that teachers try to incorporate multimedia type projects to the class because our generation is all about expressing themselves in different ways and thinking outside of the box. They want to express their story the way they want to express it. This project gave us a lot of freedom and wiggle room that we would not get with a normal writing assignment.

  11. I think using different forms of medium is important to our world today. Could you imagion if there was no internet and we learned everything we know out of books? Hardly anyone actually goes to the library and reads up on whatever topic they are trying to learn. Its as simple as going to google and typing in what your trying to learn. I think that multimediums are very important to the children in the world today. Kids are much better with tchnology then i ever was as a kid. They are growing up with all these new mediums which is good. WHat seems less boring writing or reading a paper? or making a slideshow or voice memo? Kids dont want to half to sit there and look and a boring white piece of paper. With most of the other forms of medium you can pick what you want to do, and how you want to do it. It is good for people to learn and write in many different ways, so that later in school (highschool, college) they know how to use all these different forms of medium/

  12. Multimodalism feels like a multi-genre I wrote in my senior year in high school. New medium writing feels like fusing two written documents together in hopes to create a new story in which to get a point across. Forging genres and comparing them has made this project interesting and somewhat difficult.
Choosing the way of how the visual flowed was hard in of itself, and by this influenced me to become a better debater as well as a good writer. Multimodalism is like building a model for people to view a structured argument by both written documents and visuals. This long word has its definite meaning to modern students since students multitask on nearly everything electronic.
For example, my sister was online one time, instant messaging and texting to her friends, checking her email, playing an online game, and watching a flat screen digital television. However, this is limited in the public school system, since teachers are concerned that nothing would get accomplished and pornography is the only thing important to young students in their eyes.
I believe this is a challenge as much as this class is. Much can be learned, but if I use the skills required, I will never be completely fashioned.

  14. I personally enjoy motimodal writing because, its a different style and can help me express myself in different and my own way. I think that using this you get a better understanding on what people are about and their general creativity on life is about. Motimodalism is a useful skill also because, it helps me and other individuals express there feelings and inner thoughts come out if a better way that eveyone can understand in that right way for you. Its just a helpful way that is relevent to have trying to better understand your personal way of thought and feelings.
