Presentations

Just realized that I neglected to post the prompt for this one. Sorry all. Thanks to those of you who posted anyways. If you have not yet posted, please do so in a comment to this post in time for Friday's class.

What is your opinion of presentation assignments? Do you think they are helpful and important, or meaningless and unimportant? Defend your response (and be as appropriate as possible, please). Do you enjoy public speaking? Why/why not? Why do you think that teachers consistently assign presentations even though so many students consistently dislike the experience? Do you think there is merit to completing an assignment you don't enjoy?

Those of you have already posted a response to this, thank you for being prepared and self-motivated. I will be counting your response as both a structured AND free response post.

  1. I believe the presentation assignments were a good idea because I believe as students we need more public speaking practice. I'm a little nervous to see how everyone topics are going to turn out after reading through all the previous posts, but I am looking forward to all the controversy that may occur. Personally I like public speaking and I'm not particulary bad it but I still tend to get very nervous come speaking time. Normally after the first minute or so I have my nervse under control and I'm set to go. Personally I normally don't practice speaches I normally just wing it and they always turn out amazing. Teachers give speeches to challenge us and break us out of our comfort zones to better be able to adapt to everyday life. Even though this may be a painful experience for most I believe presentations do get easier as the amount of speeches you give progresses.

  2. I think presentatiuon assignments can be helpful with our public speaking but I, myself do not like to do them. I have never liked reading aloud my thoughts on things or reading my own work in front of groups, although i guess that is probably why we have these assignments to get over that fear or dislike of speaking. Teachers assign these type of speeches so that we know how to speak in large groups if we ever need to in the future for things such as meetings or public speeches if that is in your line of work. I dislike speeches because I always feel as though my work isn't good or that my opinion is completely wrong and it could be offensive or something like that. I sometimes can find merit in doing assignments i don't enjoybut usually I am unmotivated and it ends up turning out bad or sloppy.

  3. I have always hated presentations. For what I want to do with my life I find them pointless. I’ll never have to create a presentation for anyone. At least I don’t plan to. However I don’t mind public speaking that much. I think teachers assign these kinds of projects so much because they essential do it every class, and they believe it’s a very important skill. I think that if you don’t enjoy the project it really won’t turn out that well.

  4. Overall presentation assignments are good for social skills and good for jobs later in life, but i don't really like to do it much just because all eyes are on you and easy to make you nervous but if I'm just sitting there in the class and were in an open discussion and i can easily speak whats on my mind. I personally think that doing it once in a semester isn't going to help me out with future stuff just because i believe to learn something and improve on something you need repetition, in example football to become a good team and know your plays you need to run them over and over to know what your doing. I do not enjoy public speaking just because it doesnt really interest me at all because i could care less what other people think and also what could care less to tell some people my opinion about something cause in the end you cant really persuade anyone to think what to think because there always going to have their own opinion. Like i said before teachers make us do it to get better. To the last question it depends on who you are if you care that you get praise for completing something you don't enjoy.
