Structured Response, May 3

Congratulations, it's your last (structured) blog post! In a comment to this post, please respond to the following:

Which writing project do you think was the most successful this semester? Least successful? Which project do you think was easiest? Hardest? Overall, did you like/dislike any more than any others?

If you had to remove any one day from the syllabus this semester, which day would you remove and why? Why day would you want to make sure was included before any others?

Do you think this class was helpful in preparing you to write in the college setting?

As always, I value honesty. I am always looking to revise elements of my class in order to best suit my students, and so I value your input highly; if there are elements of this class that you thought were counter-productive to you developing positive writing skills, please let me know. Please be sure to submit your response by 12:00 pm, Monday May 3.

  1. The writing projects this year were challenging and needed me to open up my mind and think critically. the most successful piece of writing was Project 3, because of my amazing ability to quote and present a paper in proper MLA (hopefully). the least successful one was Project 2, because man, I was being bombarded with confusion errors and writers blocks.
The easiest, I think, were Projects 2 and 4, just because of the cretivity that ran with them. the hardest was the writing parts for Projects 1 and 2, trying to find meaning within myself and try to get that down to my readers.
Its not that i didn't like them, they were challenging. They taught me to get back on my feet and try again.
I don't have a problem with schedules. Schedules have a problem with me :D
This class was very helpful to prepare me for the college setting. Thank you for this opportunity, Mr. Garth Sabo.

  2. I actually enjoyed this class, I think the most successful writing assignment was project one because it was the easiest and was about me so I really couldn't mess it up too much with my dumb errors I always make. The least successful and also most challenging for me was project three I am not eexactly great at quotes and siting so I didn't do too well, but I did find this project helped me to improve upon that. If I had to remove one day I would remove my presentation day, I hate to present things to groups that I have written, even small groups, so if I didn't have to do that it would have been a little less stressful. Now that it is over with though I don't mind that day too much. One day I enjoyed well actually it was a few days I liked talking about the Kurt Vonnegut short stories it was entertaining reading and we got into some funny and fun conversations that I enjoyed.
I do believe this writing class helped me, it went through most of the different types of writing so we will know how to do anything that is thrown at us in the future. Also, now we know what is expected of us in future classes when we are told to write papers. I enjoyed this class and was glad I was able to be a part of it.

  3. The project that I liked the most was project two, I loved being able to tell my story in comic book form, and I think it turned out hilarious! I thought that the first project was the easiest though, writing about my personal experiences was just easy to me. The second project was easy, just tedious. I didn't like the third project, I don't like quoting and MLA formatting, etc. I really enjoyed the class, the class discussions turned out great. I really can not think of a particular day that I would removed from the class. I very much enjoyed being in this class.

  4. My most successful project’s this semester were project 1 and project 4, probably because I enjoyed them more than the other ones. My least successful project was project 2, because, to me, it was the hardest one. Project 1 was the easiest because it was about ourselves and easy to think of ideas. I strongly disliked projects 2 and 3. I didn’t do very well on 2 but I ended up doing pretty well on 3 surprisingly. Some days I would remove were the days when we did things that I already know. I hate learning things twice. So, I would remove some of that DK handbook, too. I would include all of the rest of the days because I feel like my writing got better from the new things I learned and activities we did. This class was very helpful in preparing me to write in college. I think the best thing I learned was not doing the 5-paragraph essay thing!

  5. my favorite project we did was the most recent project 4. i feel like this was most successful and i enjoyed writing it. i think the reason i enjoyed writing it so much is because i was passionate about the topic. i find it much much easier to write about something when you love it and have so much to say. im hoping that project four is my most successful because i worked very hard on it and i believe that it is definately A material. i feel that my least successful project was project three because i did not do as well as i had expected and i made alot of mistakes especially citing my sources. i didnt think any of them were especially difficult but my project that i had the most trouble writing was definately project two when we were instructed to change the medium of our personal stories. i had a difficult time figuring out how to change it but when i did it went smoothly. i wouldnt remove anything from the course. everything that we did was worthwhile and had a purpose. i especially liked welcome to the monkey house by kurt vonnegut. all of those stories were interesting and i enjoyed analyzing them. all in all i enjoyed this class

  6. This semester of college writing one was filled with 4 main projects all in which were interesting that built off each other as time progressed. The project I felt to be most successful was the last one, project four. It pulled the three previous projects together nicely and was a good way to show how much we have grown as writers as time progressed. The least successful was project two having to re create an experience in another format was also the most difficult for me. Project one was the easiest to me because it contained fewer boundaries and we were free to write in any style we pleased. If I had to remove one day from the syllabus this year it would clearly be any of the days I missed because then I would not lose an entire letter grade for absences. Or I would remove one of the days I forgot to post a structured blog because that also highly affected my grade in a negative way. In terms of the class plans for a day if I had to pick my least favorite it would be when we had to go through books and then make it into a work cited page. I liked this the least because I do not enjoy doing work cited pages that is not to say that this isn’t a effective learning method though because despite how unpleasant it was it was a effective. It is hard to pick just one day and claim it as the most important day of the semester but editing the lion king hamlet paper and showing us a good example and bad was nice in the way that it showed us what and what he wasn’t looking for. This class was very helpful my only regret is that I didn’t take it first semester so that I could of taken these skills and applied them to other classes. Thanks to the teachings of Mr. Garth Sabo I’m walking away with a lot of new and useful information of how to better myself as a writer. Overall this class was a pleasurable experiences that i am thrilled i was apart of

  7. I think the most successful project this semester was project four, for both myself and the majority of the class. I think the fact that we had to pick a point and then defend the point meant that everyone was doing a topic that they were truly passionate about, and all projects -- especially writing -- come a lot easier when you really care about the subject.
The least successful project in my eyes was the different medium project. Most people didn't seem very enthusiastic about creating the different medium and it just seemed sort of out of place. A project like that does open the door for an outstanding project like the example video we watched in class, but rarely does a person actually go above and beyond like that guy did. It still wasn't a BAD idea for an assignment, I kind of enjoyed making my new medium and they were fun to see in class, it was just the project that I enjoyed working on the least and there seemed to be a few other people in class who agreed with me.
The easiest and hardest topics for me go hand-in-hand with my favorite least favorite. When you enjoy writing something, it always makes it a lot easier and makes it go a lot faster. For this same reason, the easiest project to me but project 4 doing the paper and speech about LeBron, and the hardest was making a new medium and defending it. The only one project that I disliked all year was the new medium.
The only thing I would remove from class were some of the activities that we did in the last ten minutes of class about whatever we had learned that day. Things like citing the books and writing about what we learned earlier in the day. The only reason I would remove these is because they often seemed rushed at the end of class and weren't very meaningful. If they were done earlier in class and were a little more structured I think they would be more helpful. I did enjoy winning my sheep during one of these activities though.
Overall I think this class was very helpful to me, I got my memory refreshed on MLA format, got a lot of general writing practice on the four papers I wrote, and I will be improving upon those papers for my final project. I think I am a better writer than I was when the class started, which would make this class successful in my eyes.

  8. I really enjoyed project 1 the most. It didn't make me feel pressured and it was a good way to start out the class. I liked it because we got to put ourselves in the project instead of just writing about something we needed to research. I don't feel there was any one day that didn't really do anything for the class. Each day we focused on a subject area within in the book or had group discussions that really helped me improve with my projects. Overall this class helped me improve. It refreshed my memory of exact MLA style and got me prepared for the step up to college level papers. I feel more confident in my writing since I've started the class. Which makes me feel that the class has helped. I enjoyed this class a lot and each project has helped me gain some knowledge along the way.

  9. My most favorite project was project one. I enjoyed writing and telling you about what had happened in my life, this came easy for me because it just flowed from my head on to the paper. My least favorite project would of been project three. I thought this project was pretty had, but overall doing the project made me learn how to correctly site things and re-learn how to do MLA. This class has helped me out a lot on learning how to free write, and how to do formal papers. I thought that each day was a very successful day. We had something planned almost everyday and had very helpful conversations. I really don't think there is anything I would cut out of this class. I thought it all was very helpful.

  10. My favorite project was project 4, though the paper was not the kind of paper I am comfortable writing and presentations shoot my nerves to shit (I could not hold my notes steady). All the projects after the first one was extremely difficult, but project 2 was the hardest in that I just couldn't make progress on it. If I had the power, I would remove that project from the syllabus. It was interesting, but well beyond my abilities and did not seem to fit into an intro writing class.

I hope I learned something from all this, since I am most likely going to be a graduate student at some time and a hundred page thesis would be a complete cluster-fuck at my current skill level. Hopefully that will change after I take a few more writing classes.

  11. THis semester we wrote 4 papers. My favorite had to have been the first project. I thought it was very easy to write about myself. haha. My least favorite had to have been the research paper on Kurt Vonnegut. I thought overall, each project was a little different, but all about the same easiness. None of them were hard or even that challenging. Some of them just made you think. I loved writing in this class. I like to write and be challenged to think about things and write about things i like and also things i need to research and check up on. I think the day we really did not need was the day we went over a good paper and then a bad paper. It was just a little boring in comparison to the others. They day we most needed was presentation days. It got everyone in our class to get up and talk. Overall, this class was very helpful in my writing process and I am glad I had to take this class. I learned a lot of useful tips.

  12. I really enjoyed this class a lot. I thought the first paper was probably the most successful because it was about something we did in life that made us the person we are today and we could easily relate to the subject at hand. The easiest project was again the first one due to the fact that it was our experiences. The hardest was project 3 because of the themes in the Kurt Vonnegut book, Welcome to the Monkey House. There was plenty of themes in the short stories but it was difficult with finding enough information to support the theme. I felt like I was repeating myself a lot and just writing about the plot the entire time. I really liked the class discussions because it opened my mind to different thoughts about the topics we were discussing. I would probably remove the presentation day because I hate presenting. I wasn't there to present, which I apologize for, but still wish I could so that I could get some points back. This class was very helpful in preparing me for future writing experiences in the college setting.

  13. I truely enjoyed the essay I wrote about my mirror story and why I changed it into a video format because I worked hard on it, I got a good grade on it, and it was fun to do. I utterly loathed the Vonnegut research paper due to the fact of how hard it was for me to generate something that would give my paper sme structure and a direction to go in. With that being said; I did like it for the challenge it gave me to critically think about my topic. Our first mirror essay assignment I have to say was the most fun for me to write becuase I really challenged myself while writing it to make it more of a short story about short stories. I was able to express my self by attempting to expand upon my imagination for that writing assignment. Honestly I have no problem admiting that I have had no want to change the sylabus or alter any of the days we spent in this class. I feel that this class was extremely beneficial to myself and to who I could possibly teach writing to my future students.

  14. I really enjoyed this class and the projects we did in this class were fairly okay. My favorite would have to be the first project "a mirror essay" because it was easier to talk about myself when I know everything in my paper is true and that I did not need to find sources to prove info about me. My least favorite would have to be Project 3. It was the most difficult paper to me in this class and i had trouble on putting my points together and to me the project seemed choppy.Overall i felt the same for all the projects they had to be done and done how the teacher wanted them. If i had to choose which ay to remove i would take out the Project 3 due date i feel i needed more time to do better on the project.

  15. i thought that project 4 was by far the best project are class did in this class. I liked that teach sabo let us pick what ever topic we wanted for the last project. I really didnt like the project we did on vonneguts book. I believe that was project 2.

If i could pick anyday out of the class that i thought was most helpful i would have to say it was our peer review days. I like that we got another look on our paper besides just our techer.

all and all i believe this class greatly helped me, and sabo is a boss ass teacher
